Addy

A soft knock sounds on my door before it opens, then Dad peeks his head in. He silently steps into the room, avoiding my eye. He’d been home when I arrived earlier, told me how sorry he was about everything, and asked me if I was okay after I informed him of the cover story Hayden provided for him. He knew it was a lie but didn’t dispute it because there’s probably not much he remembers anyway. I’d hurried out of the conversation as soon as I could because I wasn’t ready to let him off the hook for what had actually happened. And I’m still not ready, and not sure if I’ll ever be.

“I’m gonna be in my office if you need anything.”

I nod. Resuming my reread of Hamlet. Even with everything going on, my coursework isn’t enough to keep me occupied.

Dad awkwardly shifts on his feet, wincing a bit. He’s banged up, but seeing his truck went into a building, he should consider himself very lucky. But is it really luck? Now, he’s saved from all the repercussions.

Dad’s almost at the door when he turns. “Addy.”

“Yeah?”

“I really am sorry.” There’s sincerity in his repeated apology, but I can’t accept it yet—though I don’t want to tell him that. One of the biggest things that’s always held me back from telling him how much his problem hurts me, is I worry I’ll say something that’ll trigger one of his prolonged binges and something bad will happen to him. And I’m not ready to experience life without my dad. And I’ve caught glimpses of it in the times I’ve found him out of it. When he’s passed out, it’s easy to let my mind go to a dark place, and I feel the emptiness of him not being there.

“It’s okay.” I lie to him just like I lie to myself. None of this is okay.

Whether he believes it or not, he leaves and closes the door behind him.

A short time later, my phone dings with a text. I flip it over, hoping it’s Hayden—which is insane. The only reason his number is in my phone is because he put it there when he took it from me. I figured he’d done something else but that’s all I’ve found so far. The odd thing is even though it’s there, he’s never sent me a message, and that hasn’t changed because the new notification is from Megan.

Megan: OMG. Our weekend visit has Julie all recharged for battle. Another PowerPoint has been made, and this time she’s insisting on a review of your case and both slideshows by the board.

Why am I worried they’ll overturn the decision? I want to go back to Baudelaire, don’t I? Yes, I do.

Me: Tell her I said thanks but don’t get herself in trouble over it.

Megan: If Rivera didn’t kick her out for telling him he’s an intelligent but uninformed pawn, I think she’ll be okay.

Leave it to Julie to compliment and insult someone in the same sentence and get away with it.
